India is the second largest telecom market in the world in terms of number of subscribers as well as mobile handsets sold. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one such domain where India has showed its supremacy on global arena time and again. But India never had an international event which is worthy of its global ICT superpower status.
Now all this will be the thing of past as New Delhi is gearing up to host Indian Mobile Congress (IMC), an event which will further consolidate India’s position in the global ICT marketplace. What all will be showcased in the three-day event starting September 27 at Pragati Maidan, let’s find out from IMC CEO Ramakrishna P…
How did the idea of organising IMC came up?
Indian telecom market has been one of the world’s fastest growing market. At all international telecom events Indian success story is the most talked about topic. But India never had that one event which could present our success in telecom to the world. So Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the apex industry body of Indian telecom players, decided to organise IMC in collaboration with the Department of Telecom and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to showcase our prowess to the world with an aim to bring more investments and give boost to our economy. Indian government was very keen of having one such global telecom event.
Who all will be participating in this global Event and what can be expected from it?
Over 300 top mobile players, manufacturers, IT and technology companies, OEMs from India and abroad are going to be there at the IMC. All big players — Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Reliance Jio, Telenor, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Facebook, Google, Cisco, Mediatek, Wipro, SAP, Infosys, TCS — all will be there. We will also see participation of government sector firms like DRDO, Aadhar and companies under Telecom department. We will also be participation from companies working on Internet Of Things (IOT), Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. They all will be there showcasing their latest technologies and what they are going to offer in future. IMC will showcase the might of Indian telecom industry in the world and provide an opportunity to explore the horizon in ICT and offer further innovation of cutting-edge technology for common good.
The event will provide an in-depth insight into the mobile industry, highlighting specific areas of growth as well as the latest technological developments, next generation services and future trends or in other words it will make India a global destination for leaders and key players to discuss, deliberate and dialogue; unveil excellence and lead policy for a vibrant eco-system. While the who’s who of the world in the area of ICT will be coming to India in September, the event will have special sessions to deliberate upon specific issues of the South Asian sub-continent. We have specially invited delegates from Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar for IMC.
Such is the buzz about IMC that some companies planning to go to World Mobile Congress in Shanghai later this month have decided to give it a miss. IMC will be an exciting event.
What is the format of IMC?
In IMC we will be having exhibitions, seminars, discussions, global launches, showcasing of new technologies and business meetings. We have planned around 28 discussion sessions on topics ranging from 5G to emerging technologies, regulatory framework, digital life and digital content where Indian and global experts will participate.
COAI and government agencies are trying to make event fruitful for states. We are focusing in active participation of four key states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and 10 smaller states which can be benefited in terms of fresh investments and setting up of manufacturing plants. Some key Chief Ministers are likely to participate in the IMC. Similarly, we might see participation of key Ministers from the US and European nations at the event for which we are in touch with their respective embassies.
What will be the key highlights of IMC?
There will be several things at the IMC that will attract attention of one and all. For instance, we are planning to create a 500-metre long ‘smart street’ showcasing ‘smart technologies’. The idea is to showcase how a ‘Smart City’, a flagship project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will look like when it finally takes shape. It will have smart traffic signals, smart street lights, drones giving live updates, smart parking solutions, smart kiosks delivering various government services etc. It is one project that will grab major attention.
Similarly, the IMC arena will have “innovation zones” where innovators will showcase their products and technologies. One big centre of attraction will be global launches of various products, particularly mobile handsets which will be watched closely by the industry as well as commoners. Government agencies like ISRO and DRDO which have been ahead in innovation will be showcasing their products like cost-effective pacemakers will also showcase their products.
