When the mobile phone operations started in India in late 1990s, Nokia remained the undisputed leader in handsets. But then came the era of smartphones and Android, which saw influx of first Samsung and then Chinese phones, leaving the Finnish tech company way behind in the Indian mobile handset pace. But now Nokia has re-entered the Indian market with latest offerings in Android space, hoping to make a foothold in world’s second largest mobile market…

NEW DELHI, JUNE 13, 2017: Nokia, which was an iconic mobile handset brand not very long ago, on Tuesday launched three smartphones with an aim to regain its lost glory in the Indian market. HMD Global, which holds the global rights to market the iconic Nokia brand, will make available the Android-based devices from June 16, priced at Rs.9,499 onwards.

While Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 smartphones will be available only in retail stores at Rs.9,499 and Rs.12,899, Nokia 6 — the flagship — is priced at Rs.14,999 and will go for pre-booking exclusively on from July 14. Nokia had made re-entry in India last month with the launch of iconic 3310 feature phone.

Indian mobile handset market which sold 27 million units in January-March 2017 is an important market for Nokia. Samsung leads the Indian smartphone market with 28% market share followed by Chinese player Xiaomi (14%), Vivo (10%), Lenovo (9%) and Oppo (9%).

According to Nokia Director (Global Portfolio Strategy and Planning) Pranav Shroff: “These phones are based on three principles — real life experience, world-class design and regular Android updates that ensure we continue to deliver on the promise of quality and reliability that Nokia is known for.”
